Philmont Base Camp, After we arrive at base camp, we have a lot of work to do. We get our gear, our food, have a medical re-check, go through our personal equipment, go to dinner, attend meetings, attend religious services and attend an opening campfire program. After the return from our trek, we were able to tour Waite Phillips' home, the Villa Philmonte. | |
Hiking Day 1 Philmont Base Camp, Philmont Bus to Ponil Turnaround, Hike to 3 miles Bent Campsite, Ranger Training | |
Hiking Day 2, Hike 11 miles from Bent to Baldy Skyline. Hike over Wilson Mesa, stop at Pueblana to visit the Continental Tie and Lumber Company where we climbed spar poles and relived the life of a logger in the 1920's. Hike up to Baldy Skyline, at 9,000 feet of altitude. | |
Hiking Day 3, Hike 4 miles from Baldy Skyline to Baldy Town. Check out the gorgeous view and wildflowers at Ewells Park. Hike out from Baldy Town to complete our conservation work, by helping to build a new trail to Copper Park. | |
Hiking Day 4, get up early and hike to the summit of Baldy Mountain, at 12,441 feet, Philmont's tallest peak. Hike down Baldy Mountain to historic French Henry, where we learn to be Blacksmith's and pan for gold. Finish the day by hiking back to our campsites in Baldy Town. | |
Hiking Day 5, hike 8 miles from Baldy Town to Head of Dean. Stop along the way at Miranda to shoot black powder rifles, throw tomohawks. Hike Miranda's pristine meadow to Head of Dean | |
Hiking Day 6, start the day off with team challenge events at Head of Dean. Afterwards, hike 11 miles from Head of Dean to Vista Grande. Midway through the hike, we will reach the lowest altitude of our trek, for a highlight of soaking our feet in the cold Cimarron River. | |
Hiking Day 7, hike 10 miles from Visto Grande to Webster Parks, crossing Deer Lake Mesa. | |
Hiking Day 8, hike from Webster Parks down to Hunting Lodge where we tour Waite Phillips Hunting Lodge. Hike through the Demonstration forest, stop at Clarks Fork for some cow roping and Branding before heading over Shaefer's Pass to Miners Park. | |
Hiking Day 9, start the day off by rock climbing and rappelling at Miners Park. After a late start, get caught in a thunderstorm during our short 5 mile hike to Aguila. | |
Hiking Day 10, another short day, only 6 miles of hiking. That gives us time to stop at the Cantina in Abreu. While in Abreu visit the homestead, chase some chickens, sit out the rain, before hiking down to Zastrow for an evening of fun, concluding with a rededication ceremony up on the mesa after dark, and a chance to do some more star-gazing. | |
Hiking Day 11, our last day of Hiking! We even get to sleep in until 6 AM, before hiking out the last 4 miles to Rayodo turn-around, then a bus ride back to base camp. | |
Starting the journey home in Raton. enjoy pizza at the Sante Fe Pizza Company, then an afternoon swim at the Raton Aquatics Center, before boarding Amtrak to begin our journey home. |
